The LTP program is open to skaters age 4-16 who are able to skate but have little or no hockey skills.

The program is designed to help participants develop the skills required for recreational or competitive play. Players will learn the basic hockey stance, proper skating technique, use of edges and use of the stick to stickhandle, pass and shoot. All of our Learn To Play classes are based on USA Hockey American Development Model (ADM).

While we welcome skaters of all abilities, children with no on-ice experience may want to start by attending public skating at the Annex or completing the Learn To Skate Program at the Greensboro IceHouse.

Our goal is to provide the youth of Winston-Salem with a fun, safe and affordable introduction to hockey in an environment that cultivates self-confidence and a lifelong love of the game.

Our hockey program is dependent parent involvement. Your efforts make our program possible so please consider becoming an on-ice coach or helper or an off-ice volunteer. If you are interested in helping, please contact Lucas Dargis by clicking the link at the bottom of this page.

Full hockey gear is required to participate in LTP.  This season, we are offering 2  options for new players that need equipment to play.

Equipment Option 1

WSYHA rents equipment to participants who do not have their own. Our equipment includes a helmet, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, shin pads and a jersey. Equipment rentals are provided on a first come first served basis.

We have limited quantities of sticks and skates that can be  included in the rental provided we have the correct size.

Rental skates will also be available at the start of each lesson at no cost, courtesy of the Annex. Skates must be returned at the end of each practice. Good-fitting, quality skates can make a huge difference in your child’s enjoyment, so we strongly encourage all skaters to purchase their own pair (see option 2).

Equipment Option 2

WSYHA members now have access to a customized WSYHA/PureHockey online store offering the opportunity to purchase all or a portion of the needed equipment at a discounted price.  Orders will need to be placed by September 19, 2021 and orders will be shipped on October 4, 2021 - and will arrive in time for the first LTP session. The cost to order a full set of equipment including shipping is $260.  Jerseys are not included as they will be provided at your first LTP session.  You may also use the site to just buy individual pieces of equipment - we recommend this for skates!

A quick note about sticks!  The sticks offered on the WSYHA PureHockey store are entry level hockey sticks with a straight blade that are suitable for brand new players up to a height of 4'6" who may be unsure of whether they shoot left handed or right handed.  For young players who know which way they shoot, we strongly recommend purchasing a curved stick like the Bauer Vapor Prodigy (click here for a link to this item).  For taller players who need help finding a stick to buy, please reach out to us for guidance.

The LTP Program is divided into two 8-week sessions.

Session 1 runs from October through December.

Session 2 runs from January through March.

Players are encouraged to participate in as many sessions as they'd like, for as many seasons as they'd like. Our coaching staff will let you know when we feel your player is ready to move on to an organized team.

Each session costs $95 per player. There is also a once-a-year USA Hockey fee of $45. All NEW players will receive their first session FREE. Please click the link at the bottom of this page to send an email to request a discount code for registration. Players must register for each session separately.

The Learn To Play offers equipment rental package costs $50 plus a $50 deposit ($100 total). The $50 deposit will be refunded when you return the equipment. Please note that skates are NOT guaranteed and are included based on our available inventory.  We strongly recommend that you purchase your own hockey skates.
