The LTP program is open to skaters age 5-17 who have little or no hockey skills.
The program is designed to help participants develop the skills required for recreational or competitive play. Players will learn the basic hockey stance, proper skating technique, use of edges and use of the stick to stickhandle, pass and shoot. All of our Learn To Play classes are based on USA Hockey American Development Model (ADM).
While we welcome skaters of all abilities, children with no on-ice experience may want to start by attending public skating at the Annex or completing the Learn To Skate Program at the Greensboro IceHouse.
Our goal is to provide the youth of Winston-Salem with a fun, safe and affordable introduction to hockey in an environment that cultivates self-confidence and a lifelong love of the game.
Our hockey program is dependent parent involvement. Your efforts make our program possible so please consider becoming an on-ice coach or helper or an off-ice volunteer. If you are interested in helping, please contact Lucas Dargis by clicking the link at the bottom of this page.
Full hockey gear is required to participate in LTP.
WSYHA rents equipment to participants who do not have their own. Our equipment includes a helmet, neck guard, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, shin pads and a jersey. Equipment rentals are provided on a first come first served basis.
We have limited quantities of sticks and skates that can be included in the rental provided we have the correct size.
Rental skates will also be available at the start of each lesson at no cost, courtesy of the Annex. Skates must be returned at the end of each practice. Good-fitting, quality skates can make a huge difference in your child’s enjoyment, so we strongly encourage all skaters to purchase their own pair.
The LTP Program is divided into sessions.
Fall Session runs from October through December (8 weeks)
Winter Session runs from January through February (8 weeks)
Spring Session is in March (4 weeks)
Players are encouraged to participate in as many sessions as they'd like, for as many seasons as they'd like. Our coaching staff will let you know when we feel your player is ready to move on to an organized team.
Each session costs $110 per player (Spring is 55). There is also a once-a-year USA Hockey fee of around $50. All NEW players will receive their first session FREE. Please click the link at the bottom of this page to send an email to request a discount code for registration. Players must register for each session separately.
The Learn To Play offers equipment rental package costs $50 plus a $100 deposit ($150 total). The $100 deposit will be refunded when you return the equipment. Please note that skates are NOT guaranteed and are included based on our available inventory. We strongly recommend that you purchase your own hockey skates.
