About 6U/8U Mites Hockey

This information has been updated for the 2021-2022 season.

6U/8U Mites is for boys and girls born in 2013 or later that would like to learn and play  competitive or recreational hockey.

For players born 2017 and 2018, the 6U program offers an opportunity for the youngest players to practice twice a week and play games with their peer age group (boys and girls together) while also allowing them to practice with the corresponding 8U team (i.e. boys with boys and girls with girls).  This format allows coaches to focus on the needed skills for each age group while also allowing the kids to share in the team environment and have exposure to practicing with older 8U kids.  Games will be against other 6U opponents in a scramble format primarily to give the players more puck touches and a greater opportunity for success in games.  This program requires limited travel (substantially less travel than the 8U program) and is offered at a lower price point.  Advanced 6U players are will have opportunities to play up with the boys or girls 8U group.

For players born 2015 and 2016, the 8U program offers an opportunity for players to practice twice a week and play games against other competitive teams from North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.  8U boys and girls practice once with their peer age group (boys and girls combined) and once with their gender cohort each week.  The 8U program will include 3 jamborees, several home games and numerous away games.  Moderate travel is expected.  The exact game schedule will not be available until the season is underway as many programs don't start planning until then.

Starting in September, we will have two practices per week - one off-ice practice at Hanes Hosiery Community Center in Winston-Salem on Saturdays 10-11 and one on-ice practice at the Greensboro IceHouse (day and time TBD, but *likely* on Sundays).  Once the Annex opens in October, we will begin two on-ice practices per week at the Annex.  Practices will be on Sunday afternoon at 3:45pm and Wednesdays at 6:15pm.

We would certainly like all the players to attend all the events, but with such a busy schedule, it is expected that players will miss an occasional game/practice.  That’s OK – we will have an app for letting the coaches know which games you can/cannot make.  More details on that will follow once you are registered.

Sponsorship

We are always looking for sponsorship funding to help us keep cost low.  We have a set of cross-ice boards with opportunities for a sponsor decal placement for $1000.  Please reach out to your friends/family/employers to see if they would be interested in this opportunity.  Of course, the WSYHA is a non-profit organization and all donations/sponsorships are tax-deductible.

Volunteers

We have a tremendous cast of parent-volunteers this year, but we can always use more help.  We have roles for both on-ice and off-ice volunteers, so please reach out to us for more information.  All coaches are unpaid volunteers, so please help us out where you can and don’t forget to thank the many folks who donate their time for the benefit of all of our children.
